Etymology: In reference to the Chinle Formation, and Greek, stego, "cover or roof" and Greek, -ophis, "serpent."

Etymology: In honor of Farish Jenkins, whose work on the Jurassic Eocaecilia inspired the present study.

Holotype: DMNH 56658

Locality: Main Elk Creek Locality (DMNH locality 1306), Garfield County, Colorado.

Horizon: Chinle Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Middle-Late Norian Stage, Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material: Partial skull with lower jaw and diarticulated postcrania.

Referred material:

Locality: DMNH Locality 692, Eagle County, Colorado.

Horizon: Red siltstone member, Chinle Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Middle-Late Norian Stage, Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material:

DMNH 39033: Anterior skull, and partial lower jaw preservedin burrow fill.
