Etymology: Greek, iris, "rainbow," allusion to the Rainbow Park microsite, and Greek, triton, "a newt."

Etymology: In honor of Max Hecht, one of the first authors to describe salamander material from the Morrison Formation.

Horizon: Upper or Brushy Basin member, Morrison Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Zone 3.

Age: Comobluffian age, Kimmeridgian Stage, uppermost Malm Epoch, Late Jurassic.

Material: Part and counterpart of a single skeleton missing only small bones.
