Genus: Pintosaurus PINEIRO, ROJAS & UBILLA, 2004
Etymology: In honor of Dr. Iraja Damiani Pinto, for his substantial contributions to South American paleontology, and for his support and friendship over the years, and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Species: magnidentis PINEIRO, ROJAS & UBILLA, 2004
Etymology: Latin, magna, "great" and Laitn, dentis, "tooth." The trivial name referes to the large palatine tooth set next to the palatine-vomerine suture.

Holotype: FC-DPV 1181

Locality: A locality near Colonia Orozco, Cerro Largo County, Uruguay.

Horizon: Buena Vista Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Permian.

Material: Partial skull and lower jaws preserved in tight occlusion.
