Genus: Sauropareion MODESTO, SUES & DAMIANI, 2001
Etymology: Greek, sauros, "lizard" and Greek, pareion, "check": refers to the superfically lizard-like appearance of the temporal region.

Species: anoplus MODESTO, SUES & DAMIAN, 2001
Etymology: Greek, anoplos, "without arms or armor": alludes to the absence fo cheek spines that ornimaent many of its procolophonid relatives.

Holotype: SAM PK-11192

Locality: Barendskraal farm, Middelburg District, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

Horizon: Palingkloof Member, Balfour Formation (old Katberg Formation), Beaufort Group.

Biostratigraphy: Lystrosaurus Assemblage zone.

Age: Early Scythian Epoch, Early Triassic.

Material: Skull and mandible posterior to the external nares, vertebral fragments and cervical rib fragments.
