Etymology: The genus name is derived from Old English and recognizes the tricuspid nature of the maxillary teeth of this taxon, Mercian, preo, "three", Mercian, orda, "points" and Mercian, top, "tooth".

Etymology: Greek, "yamning chasm or fissure": in reference to the fissures in which Threordatoth and numerous other taxa are preserved.

Holotype: UMZC 2023.122

Locality: Site 5A, Slickstones (Cromhall) Quarry, (ST 704916), 51°6219N, 2.4299°W, Gloucestershire (Avon?) County, England, Southern United Kingdom.

Horizon: Karstic fissures in Dinatian limestone.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Carnian/Norian Stage, or Rhaetian Stage, Upper Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.
