Etymology: Latin, aves, "bird", and Latin cranium, "cranium".

Species: renestoi PRITCHARD & NESBITT, 2017
Etymology: In honor of Silvio Renesto, who described much of the drepanosauromoprh fossil record from Triassic Italy.

Holotype: AMNH FARB 30834

Locality: Ghost Ranch Quarry or the Whitaker Quarry, SE 1/4, SE. 1/4, SW 1/4, Section 1, Township 24 North, Range 4 East, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico.

Horizon: Rock Point Formation, Chinle Group.

Note: Listed as 'siltstone member', Chinle Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Apachean, Late Norian Stage, Upper Late Triassic Epoch, Late Late Triassic.

Material: Partial skull and articulated cervical series. Additional drepanosaurid caudal vertebrae and limb fragments are preserved in the block, but are not clearly associated with the individual to which the skull and cervical vertebrae belong.
