Genus: Dendromaia MADDIN, MANN & HERBERT, 2020
Etymology: Greek, dendron, "tree" and Greek, maia, "caring mother." Because the animals were discovered in a lithifield stump showoing proposed pariental care behaviour.

Species: unamakiensis MADDIN, MANN & HERBERT, 2020
Etymology: Mi'kmaq name for Cape Breton Island, where the specimen was found.

Holotype: NSM017GF020.001

Locality: Point Aconi, eastern coast of Cape Breton Island, near the town of Sydney, Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia Province, Canada.

Horizon: Sydney Mines Formation, Morien Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Moscovian Epoch, Middle Pennsylvanian Subperiod, Middle late Carboniferous Period.

Material: 2 large fragmentary varanopid individuals.

Paratype: A small varanopid preserved alongside the holotype specimens.
