Genus: Megachirella RENESTO & POSENATO, 2003
Etymology: Greek, mega, "large" and Greek, cheiros, "hand": little animal with large hand, referred ot the shape and robustness of the manus.

Species: wachtleri RENESTO & POSENATO, 2003
Etymology: In honor of Michael Wachtler who discovered the specimen.

Holotype: KUH-1501

Locality: Plant-rich level, above bed K 11 of Bechstadt & Brandner, 1970, exclosure 2, Monte Pra della Vacca/Kuhwiesenkopf area, Braies (Prags), Bolzano (Bozen), Trento Province, Trention-Alto Adige Region, Northern Italy.

Horizon: Dont Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Anisian, Lower Middle Triassic Epoch, Middle Triassic.

Material: Fragmentary skull and fragmentary skeleton.
