Genus: Australosyodon RUBIDGE, 1994
Etymology: Australo, Southern, Syodon the genus of anteosaurid dinocephalian most closely related to this specimen.

Species: nyaphuli RUBIDGE, 1994
Etymology: The species is in honour of John Nyuaphuli who collected the specimen.

Holotype: NMQR 3152

Locality: On the farm of Tuinkraal, Prince Albert Albert Road, Western Cape Province, South Africa.

Horizon: Lowermost portion of the Abrahamskraal Formation, base of the Beaufort Group and directly overlies the Waterford Formation, Ecca Group.

Biostratigraphy: Eodicynodon-Tapiocanius Assemblage Zone.

Age: Kazanian substage, Capitanian Stage, Middle Zechstein Epoch, Late Middle Permian.

Material: Skull and mandible, left side well preserved with several teeth, right side crushed prior to fossilization.
