Etymology: Greek, herpeton, "creeping animal" and Greek, skylax, "young dog or whelp."

Etymology: In honor of Dr. James A Hopson, for his pioneerng work on biarmosuchians.

Holotype: CGP 1/67

Locality: Farm Matjiesfontein (235), 32°14'05"S, 21°39'50"E, Beaufort West District, Western Cape Province, South Africa.

Horizon: Teekloof Formation, Beaufort Group.

Biostratigraphy: Cistecephalus zone.

Age: Tatarian Age, Lopingian Subepoch, Zechstein Epoch, Late Permian.

Material: Well-preserved skull with lower jaw that is missing the zygomatic arhc, postorbital bar, and postdentary bones on the left side.
