Etymology: Bashan referes to the ancient name of Chongqing, China and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Species: primitivus DAI, LI, MAIDMENT, WEI, ZHOU, HU, MA, WANG, HU & PENG, 2022
Etymology: Latin, primitivus, "primitive" in reference to the newly named species represents the earliest-diverging stegosaur.

Holotype: CLGPR V00006-1

Locality: Laojun Village, Pu'an Township, Yunyang County, 108°55'86"E, 30°50'45.44"N, Chongqing Municipality, China.

Horizon: Lower Member, Shaximiao Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Bajocian Stage, Dogger Epoch, Middle Jurassic.

Material: 1 dorsal vertebra, 2 caudal vertebrae, right scapula, right coracoid, left femur, left tibia, left fibula, 1 metatarsal, 3 pieces of dermal armor (1 plate and 2 spines) and some ribs.

Referred material:

CLGPR V00006-2: 5 dorsal vertebrae, right tibia, right fibula, 1 piece of dermal plate and some ribs.
