Etymology: Greek, thyreos, an oblong shield that was used by Hellenistic armies and later adopted by other peoples; in reference to the osteoderms of teh specimen, and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Etymology: The specific name atlasicus referes to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and North Africa.
Holotype: HIIUC-BN00
Locality: BN-HIIUC, Boulemane-El Mers Region, Boulahfa North, central Middle Atlas, Morocco.
Horizon: El Mers III Formation.
Biostratigraphy:
Age: Bathonian-?Callovian Stage, Dogger Epoch, Middle Jurassic.
Material: 9 dorsal vertebrae and 21 dorsal rib remains, a limb bone (fibula?), and 6 dermal elements.
