Etymology: Chinese, Changcheng, “Great Wall” and Greek, ornis, “bird”: The Great Wall Bird.

Species: hengdaoziensis JI, CHIAPPE & JI, 1999
Etymology: Hengdaozi referes to the stratigraphic horizon where it was collected.

Holotype: National Geological Museum of China collection, GMV 2129-a/b

Locality: Jianghsangou village (~25 km south of Beipiao City), western Laioning Province, northeastern China.

Horizon: Horizon 1, Lower part of the Yixian Formation, Jehol Group.
Note: Orginally Hengdaozi Member, Chaomidianzi Formation, a newly established unit formerly regarded as the lower part of the Yixian Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Psittacosaurus Fauna, Confuciusornis Avifauna.

Age: Valanginian Stage, Upper Neocomian Subepoch, Early Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: Nearly complete specimen with feather impressions with 2 long tail feathers.
