Etymology: Latin, perplexus, "tangled, intricate": referring to the combination of plesiomorphic and derived characters present in the holotype specimen.

Holotype: IVPP V24194

Locality: Shixia, Weichang County, Hebei Province, China.

Horizon: Dabeigou Formation, Lowest Jehol Biota.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Barremian Stage, Lower Gallic Subepoch, Middle Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: Skull and skeleton of a nearly complete specimen.

Note: Has feather impressions.
