Etymology: In reference to the Kariri people of northeastern Brazil, and Latin, avis, "bird."

Etymology: Latin, mater, "mother," for being the oldest ornithuromorph from South America.

Holotype: UFRJ-DG 116 Av

Locality: Pedra Branca Mine, Nova Olinda County, 7°7'25"S, 39°42'7'W, Ceara State, Brazil.

Horizon: Crato Formation, Arirape Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Aptain Stage, Gallic Subepoch, Late Early Creaceous Epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: A slab and counterslab including partial right pes, a nearly complete tarsometatarsus and several apparently unconnected pedal phalanges, which are tentatively ideintifed as follows: digit II phalanges 1 and 2, digit III phalanges 1 to 3, 2 indeterminate phalanges of digit IV, unbial phalanx of digit II and at least 20 contour featers in close association with the foot bones.
