Etymology: Latin, magnus, “big”, and Latin, avis, “bird”.

Species: ekalakaensis CLARKE, ATTERHOLT, SCANNELLA, CARROLL & O’CONNOR, 2024
Etymology: In honor of of the town of Ekalaka, Montana, close to where this specimen was discovered. Ekalaka is Lakota for "one who wanters".Ekalak's big bird.

Holotype: CCM V2019.5.1

Locality: Locality under the auspices of the Bureau of Land management (Permit MTM 108846), Carter County, Montana.

Horizon: Hell Creek Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Maastrichtian Stage, Late Senonian subepoch, Late Gulf epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: A partial right tarsometatarus, missnig the proximal portions of metatarsals II and III, and all of metatarsal IV.
