Etymology: Greek, protos, "first" and Greek, pteryx, “wing”.

Species: fengningensis ZHANG & ZHOU, 2000
Etymology: Referes to the Fenging County, Hebei Province, Peoples republic of China, where the specimen was collected.

Holotype: IVPP V 11665

Locality: Fengning County, Hebei Province, Peoples republic of China.

Horizon: Unnamed Formation, equivalent to the Dadianzi Formation (not Yixian Formation).

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Valanginian Stage, Middle Neocomian Subepoch, Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: Nearly complete specimen, skull with 4 teeth, feathers on body, wings and two long tail feathers.

Paratype:

IVPP V 11844: Partial skeleton with preserved feathers and down.
