Etymology: Greek, simil, "similar" + Yanornis. In reference to this specimen being similar to Yanornis martini.

Etymology: Latin, brevi, "short" and Latin, pectis, "sternum."

Holotype: IVPP V13278

Locality: Xierhuqiao Village, Yixian County, Liaoning Province, China.

Horizon: Jiufotang Formation.
