Etymology: Latin, sulcus, "groove" and Latin, avis, "bird"; in reference to the grooves on the teeth that make the new taxon unique.

Etymology: In honor of the Gee family of La Canada, U.S.A., for thier generous contributions in support of Mesozoic bird reserach.

Holotype: BMNH Ph-000805 (cast LACM 7868/155179)

Locality: Near Lamadong Village, Jianchang County, Huludao City, liaoning Province.

Horizon: Yixian Formation, Jehol Group.

Age: Early Cretaceous.

Material: Nearly complete skull and skeleton.
