Etymology: In reference to Aguja, for the Aguja Formation in Texas and Greek,
ceratops, "horned face," a common suffix for the generic name of ceratopsians.

Etymology: A 'maverick' is an unbraded range animal, or a lone dissenter (in
this case, a single specimne that differs from others). The term refers here
particularly to the Old Maveric Road, Brewster
County, Texas, an unimproved road that transverses the
western border of Big Bend National Park, and passes near where the holotype was
collected.
