Genus: Borealopelta BROWN, HENDERSON, VINTHER, FLETCHER, SISTIAGA, HERRERA & SUMMONS, 2017
Etymology: Latin, borealis, "northern," and Greek, pelta, "shield": in reference to the norhtern locality and the preserved epidermal scales and dermal osteoderms.

Etymology: In honor of Mark Mitchell for his more than 7,000 hours of patient and skilled prepartion of the holotype.

Holotype: RTMP 2011.033.0001

Locality: Suncor Millennium Mine, Fort McMurry, Regional Municipality of Wood-Buffalo, Alberta Province, Canada.

Horizon: Wabiskaw Member, Clearwater Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Aptian Stage, Lower Gallic Subepoch, Late Early Cretaceous Epoch, Latest Early Cretaceous.

Material: Articulated specimen preserving the head, neck, most of the trunk and sacrum, a complete right and a partial left forelimb and manus, partial pes.

Note: With skin impressions and keratin that shows the animals color in life.
