Etymology: As per Ben Creisler Greek, hieros, “sacred” or hieron “temple”, and Greek, sauros, “lizard”: “sacred lizard?”.

Etymology: In honor of Charles H. Sternberg, who discovered the specimen.

Holotype: YPM 1847

Locality: 5 miles south of Castle Rock, and 3 miles south of Hackberry Creek, Gove County, Kansas.

Horizon: Smoky Hill Member, Niobrara Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Coniacian Stage, Senonian Subepoch, Gulf Epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: Dermal scutes, dermal scutes of the skull, caudal spines, and fragmentary skeleton.
