Etymology: Greek, paradoxus, "contrary to expectation": In reference to the surprising characteristics of this animal.

Holotype: IVPP V12560

Locality: WanJiagou, Yixian, Liaoning Province, China.

Horizon: Yixian Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Early Cretaceous.

Material: Fragmentary skull and fragmentary skeleton of a juvenile.
Note: Has a shell-like ventral armor.

Locality: Dawangzhangzi Village, Lingyuan County, west edge of Liaoning Province, China.

Horizon: Yixian Formation.
