Genus: Tianchisaurus DONG, 1994
Etymology: The generic name is derived from “Tianchi”, which is pinyin Chinese meaning the Heavenly Pool (Tian = Heaven, Chi = pool or lake), and is a famous lake in the Tian Shan Mountains, and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Locality: On the north slope of Bodga Fen (the summit of which is 5,445 m above sea level) of the Tian Shan (mountains), near the famous lake known as Tianchi, 35 km northwest to Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, Sangonghe Valley, Fukang County, Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu (Sinkang) Province, China.

Horizon: Toutunhe Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Bathonian Stage, Middle Dogger Epoch, Middle Jurassic.

Material: Fragments of a skull, 5 cervical, 6 dorsals, 7 sacral, and 3 caudal vertebrae, some limb bone fragments, many scutes, fragmentary unidentified elements.
