Etymology: Byzantine Greek for gypsy, and Greek, sauros, "lizard"; in reference to the existence of Late Cretaceous migrations between western and eastern Europe revealed by these remains.

Etymology: Latin, Velauco, the name of the city -Velaux- where the material was collected.

Holotype: VBN.93.01.a,b,c, d.

Locality: La Bastide Neuve, Velaux, Aix-en-Province Basin, Bouches-du-Rhone Department, France.

Horizon: Glauconitic grainstone limestone.
