Etymology: From several Indian Languages, bara, “big”, and pa, “leg”, and Greek, sauros, "lizard": “Big leg lizard”.

Etymology: The first excavation of the Kota sauropod was carried out in the centenary year of the birth of one of India’s most famous poets, Rabindranath Tagore, and named in his memory.

Locality: Village of Pochampalli (longitude 80'05"E, Latitude 18'44"N), Chanda Valley, Pranhita-Godavari Valley, Andhra Pradesh State, India.

Horizon: Lower Kota Formation, Gondwana Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Pliensbachian Stage, Middle Upper Lias Epoch, Early Jurassic.
