Genus: Blikanasaurus GALTON & van HEERDEN, 1985
Etymology: Since 1965 the holotype specimen has been known as the<<Blikana dinosaur>> after the locality where it was found, and Greek, sauros,"lizard": “Blikana lizard”.

Species: cromptoni GALTON, & van HEERDEN, 1985
Etymology: In honor of Dr. A. W. Crompton of Harvard University, Cambridge, USA. In recognition of his research on fossil vertebrates from South Africa.

Holotype: SAM K403

Locality: 1.6 km northeast of Blikana Trading Store, Transkei (Herschel) District, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

Horizon: Lower Elliot Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Carnian or Early Norian Stage, Upper Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material: Tibia, fibula, left epodals, tarsus, and pes with two or three phalanges missing.

Locality: From an erosional gully ("donga") on the farm Damplaats, Ladybrand Disrict, Eastern Free State, South Africa.

Horizon: Lower Elliot Formation.
