Genus: Dashanpusaurus PENG, YE, GAO, SHU & JIANG, 2005
Etymology: In reference to where the specimen was found, Dashanpu (Dashnapu Dinosaur Quarry), Hechuan County, Sichuan Basin, Sichuan (Szechwan) Province, China and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Etymology: In honor of Prof. Dong Zhiming, a distinguished Chinese dinosaurologist for his important contributions to the excavation, preservation and study of the Dashanpu Dinosaur quarry.

Holotype: ZDM 5028 (field no. I-K)

Locality: Dashanpu (Dashnapu Dinosaur Quarry), lat. 29°5’N, long. 104°50’E, situated 11 km east of Zigong City, 250 km south of Chengdu, Hechuan County, Sichuan Basin, Sichuan (Szechwan) Province, China.

Horizon: Xaishaximiao (Lower Shaximiao) Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Bathonian-Callovian Stage, Dogger Epoch, Middle Jurassic.

Material: 4 cervicals, 13 dorsals, 5 sacrals, and 33 caudals, left ulna, ilium, pubis, femur and tibia.

Paratype:

ZDM 5027 (field no. II-D): 4 cervical vertebrae, 12 dorsals, 2 caudals vertebrae, some dorsal ribs, left scapula and coracoid, left humerus and radius ,
