Genus: Gryponyx BROOM, 1911
Etymology: Greek, gryops, “crooked, curved”, and Greek, onyx, “claw”: Curved claw.

Species: africanus BROOM, 1911
Etymology: In reference to Africa, where the specimen was found.

Holotype: SAM 3357-9

Locality: Farm of Mr. J. L. Harries, Foutani, near Fouriesburg, 28'40"S, 28'15"E, Orange Free State, South Africa.

Horizon: Upper Elliot Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: ?Hettangian-Lower Sinemurian Stage, Lower Lias Epoch, Early Jurassic.

Material: Right and left manus, most of the dorsal vertebrae, the whole pelvis, both hind limbs and the right pes. The greater part of the tail had to be left in the rock, as, owing to its passing straight into the cliff.
