Genus: Karongasaurus GOMANI, 2005
Etymology: In reference to the Karonga District in northern Malawi where the specimen was collected, and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Species: gittelmani GOMANI, 2005
Etymology: In honor of Steve Gittleman, fried of science, for his work as president of the Dinosaur Society.

Holotype: MAL-175

Locality: CD-9, Mwakasyunguti Dinosaur Beds, East of Mwakasyunguti, North-South elongate Valley, Karonga District, Northern Malawi.

Horizon: Dinosaur beds, Lupata Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Aptian Stage?, Middle Gallic Subepoch, Upper Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: Dentary with conical replacement teeth.
