Province, China, and Greek, sauros, “lizard”: “Mamenchi lizard.”
Note: Due to an accentual mix-up by Young, the location name Mamíngxi
('horse-neighing brook') was mistaken as Maménxi ('horse-gate
brook').

Etymology: Named for expedition members, of both nationalities (China and Canada) who labored
together within the quarry from which the type specimen was excavated in
mutual respect and friendship.

Locality: Latitude 44’30:”N, longitude 90’00”E, in heavily dissected exposures in the upper part of the Shishugou Formation along the southern edge of a large mesa, 22 km north of Jiangjunmiao and 1.7 km east of the main road form Qitai, in the eastern part of Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, Jiangjunmaio region, China.
