Genus: Maxakalisaurus KELLNER, CAMPOS, AZEVEDO, TROTTA, HENRIQUES, CRAIK, & SILVA, 2006
Etymology: The generic name is formed by Maxakali, from one of the Macro-je stock language, honoring the Maxakali ethnic group that is present in the Minas Gerias State where this dinosaur was found, and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Etymology: Maxakali, Topa, which is a tribal god worshiped by the Maxakali ethnic group.

Holotype: MN 5013-V

Locality: 45km west of the Prata town, at the Prata-Campina Verde road, Serra da Boa Vista, 19°27'26.0"S, 49°14'42.6"W, Minas Gerais State, Brazil.

Horizon: Adamantina Formation, Bauru Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Campanian Stage, Senonian Subepoch, Gulf Epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: Incomplete right maxilla with teeth, 12 cervical vertebrae with several cervical ribs, part of 7 dorsals (with ribs), one sacral neural spine, 1 sacral centrum, 6 caudal vertebrae, several hemal arches, part of both scapulae, both sternal plates, distal portion of a left ischium, both humeris, the second and fourth right metacarpals, incomplete fibula, one osteoderm and several unidentified bones.
