Genus: Patagosaurus BONAPARTE, 1979
Etymology: For Patagonia, the region of Argentina where the specimen was found, and Greek, sauros, "lizard": “Patagonia lizard”.

Species: fariasi BONAPARTE, 1979
Etymology: In honor of villager Ricardo Farias, who found the specimen on his land.

Holotype: PVL 4170 (Specimen 1)

Locality: 5 km north of Cerro Condor, 100 m east of road to Cerro Condor a Paso del Sapo, Department of Paso de Indios, Chubut Province, Patagonia, Argentina.

Horizon: Canadon Asfalto Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Callovian Stage, Upper Dogger Epoch, Middle Jurassic.

Material: 4 anterior cervicals, 3 posterior cervicals, 3 anterior dorsals articulated with a cervical, 5 posterior dorsals, 2 ribs, 5 sacrals, 6 proximal caudals, 12 middle and distal caudals, several cotes, several hemaux, right ilium, ischia partially fused, missing posterior end, left pubis, proximal part of right scapula with coracoid, right humerus and right femur.

PVL-4615 (Specimen 5): One dorsal centrum, one incomplete ischium of a juvenile.
