Genus: Petrobrasaurus FLIPPI, CANUDO, SALGADO, GARRIDO, GARCIA, CERDA & OTERO, 2011
Etymology: In reference to the Petrobras oil company for its constant colaboration in the maintenance and preservation of the palaeontological heritage in the area of Rincon de los Sauces, Neuquen Province, Patagonia, Argentina and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Etymology: In reference to the Puesto Hernandez oil field, where the fossils where found.

Locality: PH 1597 locality, 37°22'42.5S, 69°04'23.1W, Rincon de los Sauces, Neuquen Province, Patagonia, Argentina.

Horizon: Plottier Formation.
