Genus: Shunosaurus DONG, ZHOU, & ZHENG, 1983
Etymology: From Shou, and old name for the Sichuan region of China, and Greek, sauros, "lizard": “Sichuan lizard”.

Species: lii DONG, ZHOU & ZHANG, 1983
Etymology: In honor of hydrologist Li Bing, the magistrate who governed the Qin State of what is now Sichuan Province between 256-251 BC.

Holotype: IVPP V9065

Locality: Dashanpu (Dashanpu Dinosaur Quarry), lat. 29°5’N, long. 104°50’E, situated 11 km east of Zigong City, 250 km south of Chengdu, Hechuan County, Sichuan Basin, Sichuan (Szechwan) Province, China.

Horizon: Xaishaximiao (Shaximiao) Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Bathonian-Callovian Stage, Dogger Epoch, Middle Jurassic.

Material: Partial skeleton including 5 cervical vertebrae, 13 articulated dorsal vertebrae, a fragmentary sacral centrum, 2 caudal vertebrae, left radius, ulna and a single carpal, ilium, ischium, and pubis (weathered and fragmentary), left femur, tibia, fibula, astragalus and complete metatarsals although all but several phalanges are absent.
