Etymology: In reference to Zapala, a city in the province of Neuquen, Argentina,
80 km north of the holotype locality, and Greek, sauros, "lizard": Zapala lizard.

Etymology: In honor of Dr. J. Bonaparte, who collected the holotype material.
Holotype: Pv-6127-MOZ
Locality: Puesto Morales, La Picaza, 39°33'19"LS, 70°09'11"LO, central Neuquen Province, Patagonia, Argentina.
Horizon: Piedra Parada Member, La Amarga Formation.
Biostratigraphy:
Age: Upper Barremian Stage-Early Aptian Stage, Lower Gallic Subepoch, Middle Early Cretaceous Epoch.
Material: Cervical, sacral and caudal vertebrae, left ischium, left pubis, fragmentary left ilium, anterior left femur, and left tibia.
