Etymology: Greek, cryo, "cold, freeze" (In reference to its polar locality), Greek, loph, "crest" and Latin, saurus, "lizard."

Etymology: In honour of D. Elliot, one of the discoveries of the fossil locality.

Holotype: FMNH PR 1821

Locality: Mount Kirkpatrick near Beardmore Glacier in the Transantarctic Mountains, East Antarctica, Antarctica.
Note:Approximately 650 km from the geographic south pole.

Horizon: Hanson Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Sinemurian-Pliensbachian Stage, Lias Epoch, Early Jurassic.

Material: Posterior part of skull and articulated mandibles, femur, ilium, ischium, pubis, tibiotarsus, fibula, and 30 vertebrae.

Note: 2 ribs have been found in the throat region of Cryolophosaurus and may have choked to death eating the prosauropod.
