Etymology: Greek, eos, "dawn": in reference to its primitive nature and early temporal occurrence, and Latin, raptor, "plunder" in reference to its carnivorous habits and grasping hand.

Etymology: Latin, luna, "moon" and Latin, -ensis, "place": in reference to the type locality, the valley of the Moon.

Holotype: PVSJ 512

Locality: Valley of the Moon, Ischigualasto Provincial Park, Ischigualsto-Villa Union Basin, San Juan Province, northwestern Argentina.

Horizon: Ischigualasto Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Carnian Stage, Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material: Skull and nearly complete skeleton.
