Genus: Guaibasaurus BONAPARTE, FERIGOLO & RIBEIRO, 1999
Etymology: After the “Rio Guaiba Hydrographic Basin,” Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil, where the fossil was collected as part of the “ProGuaiba Project”, a scientific program supporting research on Triassic fossils, and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Species: candelariensis BONAPARTE, FERIGOLO & RIBEIRO, 1999
Etymology: In reference to Candelaria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil, the city near the fossil locality, where the holotype was collected.

Holotype: MCN-PV 2355

Locality: 100 meters south of RS 287 (RS State Highway), 7.5 km west to the City of Candelaria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil.

Horizon: Caturrita Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Icidosaur Assemblage Zone.

Age: Adamanian, Late Carnian Stage, Lower Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material: 5 incomplete dorsal centra, 3 incomplete dorsal neural arches, 2 incomplete sacral centra, 10 almost complete and articulated caudals with haemal arches, 5 incomplete dorsal ribs, left incomplete scapula and coracoids, a fragment of left and almost complete right ilium, nearly complete pubes, both incomplete ischia, both incomplete femora, both incomplete tibiae and fibulae, both feet with fragmentary tarsals, except for a complete right calcaneum.

Hypodigm:

MCN-PV-2356: Incomplete left tibia and fibula, articulated with a complete foot, including proximal tarsals and 5 metatarsals and phalanges.

Locality: Linha Sao Luiz Locality, an abandoned quarry located 1.5 km northwest of downtown do Soturno Faxinal, 53°30'23"E, 29°34'08"S, near Barrio Santo Antonino, Faxinal do Soturno, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.

Horizon: Caturrita Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Icidosaur Assemblage Zone.

Age: Adamanian, Lower Coloradian age, Late Carnian-Early Norian Stage, Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.
