Etymology: The specific name is from the Chinese, wucai, "five colours," which refers to the rich colours of ricks that produced the specimen.

Locality: Wucaiwan area, Junggar Basin, Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu (Sinkang) Province, China.

Horizon: Upper part of the Shishugou Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Oxfordian Stage, Lower Malm Epoch, Early Late Jurassic.

Material: A partially articulated skeleton.
