Etymology: Chinese, jinfeng, "Golden Phoenix," the queen of birds in Chinese Foklor, and Greek, -pteryx, "wing or feather."

Etymology: Greek, elegans, "elegant."

Holotype: CACS-IG-04-0801

Locality: Longfengshan Hill, Fengning County, Hebei Province, China.

Horizon: Middle part of the Qiqotou Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Jurassic or Early Cretaceous.

Note: The Qiqotou Formation is lower than the Sinosauropteryx-bearing beds of the Yixian Formation.

Material: Nearly complete specimen with feathers.
