Etymology: Meraxes after a dragon of the Song of Ice and Fire fiction series by George R. R. Martin.

Species: gigas CANALE, APESTEGUIA, GALLINA, MITCHELL, SMITH, CULLEN, SHINYA, HALUZA, GIANECHINI & MAKOVICKEY, 2022
Etymology: Greek, gigas, "giant", refering to the enormous size of the species.

Holotype: MMCh-PV 65 (Museo Municipal "Ernesto Bachmann," Villa Del Chochon, Neuquen, Argentina).

Locality: Las Campanas Canyon, 25 km southest of Villa El Chocon, Neuquen Province, Patagonia, Argentina.

Horizon: Huincul Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Cenomanian Stage, Uppermiddle Gallic Subepoch, Lowermost Gulf Epoch, Late Early or Middle Cretaceous-Turonian Stage, Uppermost Gallic Subepoch, Lower Gulf Epoch, Early Late Cretaceous.

Material: Nearly complete skull without mandibles, petoral and pelvic girdles, fore- and hindlimbs, fragments of cervical and dorsal vertebrae, complee sacrum, and proximal and middle caudal vertebral series.
