Genus: Ningyuansaurus JI, LÜ, WEI & WANG, 2012
Etymology: Generic name derived from "Ningyuan", the ancient name of Xingcheng City, Liaoning Province, China where the holotype was discovered, and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Species: wangi JI, LÜ, WEI & WANG, 2012
Etymology: In honor of Mr. Wang Qiuwu, who offered the specimen for scientific study.

Holotype: Xingcheng Confucisornis Museum

Locality: Lamadong, Jianchang County, Liaoning Province, China.

Horizon: Yixian Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Early Cretaceous.

Material: Skull and skeleton.
