Genus: Saurophagus STOVALL vide RAY, 1941/SWAINSON 1831 (nomen nudum)
Etymology: Greek, sauros, “lizard”, and Greek, phago, “eat” +
us: Lizard eater.
Note: Peoccupied name by Saurophagus sulphuratus SWAINSON, 1832 (Great Kiskadee, now a synonym of Pitangus sulphuratus).
Species: maximus STOVALL vide RAY, 1941 (nomen nudum)
= Allosaurus maximus (STOVALL vide RAY, 1941) PAUL, 1988 [sic, for Allosaurus
amplexus]
Etymology: Latin, maximus, "greatest."
Lectotype: OMNH 4666
Note: CZAPLEWSKI, CIFELLI & LANGSTON JR., 1994 state there there is no record of the old number 4666 nor evidence that it was written on any of the spcimens.
Locality: Stovalls Pit 1 (Quarry No. 1), on Highway 64, 8 miles east of Kenton, Cimarron County, Oklahoma.
Horizon: Brushy Basin Member, Morrison Formation.
Biostratigraphy: Zone 3.
Age: Comobluffian age, Kimmeridgian Stage, uppermost Malm Epoch, Late Jurassic.
Material: Right tibia.
