Genus: Veterupristisaurus RAUHUT, 2011
Etymology:
Latin, veterus, "old," Latin, pristis, "a large sea monster, often used for
sharks" and Greek, sauros, "lizard"; Thus, the name means old shark lizard,
in reference to the status of the new taxon as the currently oldest known represntative
of the shark-toothed lizards, the carcharodontosaurids.
Species: milneri RAUHUT, 2011
Etymology: In honor of Angela C. Milner, for her many contributions to vertebrate
paleontology, including numerous works on theropod dinosaurs.
Holotype: MB R 1938 (St 270)
Locality: Locality St (EH), Tendaguru, Tanzania, East Africa.
Horizon: Middle Dinosaur (Saurian bed) Member, Tendaguru Formation.
Biostratigraphy:
Age: Kimmeridigan to earliest Tithonian Stage, Upper Malm Epoch, Late Jurassic.
Material: An isolated middle caudal vertebra.
Referred material:
MB R 2166 (St 757): 2 partially fused posterior middle caudal vertebrae
Note: Pathologic.
MB R 1940 (TL 45): A cervical neural arch, a dorsal vertebra, and a large anterior caudal vertebra.
