Genus: Zanabazar NORELL, MAKOVICKEY, BEVER, BALANOFF, CLARK, BARSBOLD & ROWE, 2009
Etymology: In honor of Zanabazar (1635-1723), the first Bogd Gegen of Mongolia.

Species: junior (BARSBOLD, 1974) NORELL, MAKOVICKEY, BEVER, BALANOFF, CLARK, BARSBOLD & ROWE, 2009 (Type)
= Saurornithoides junior BARSBOLD, 1974
Etymology: In reference to it being younger than Saurornithoides, of which it was once considered a second species.

Holotype: GI No. SPS 100/1

Locality: Bügiin (Bugeen) Tsav, Nomingiin Gobi Desert, Bayankhongor Province, Mongolia.

Horizon: Upper Nemegt Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Tarbosaurus bataar and Saurolophus angusitrostris Zone.

Age: Lower Maastrichtian Stage, Uppermost Senonian, Uppermost Gulf Epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: Skull in which; the palatal region; quadrates, quadratojugals and left jugal, postorbital and squamosal are absent, anterior parts of both jaws, the sacrum, an incomplete series of caudal vertebrae, the proximal end of the right metatarsus and adjoining tarsals, the distal end of the right tibia and fibula, and adjoining astragalus and calcaneum.
