Species: inexpectatus BALONET & BUFFETAUT, 1987
Etymology: The specific name is an allusion to the fact it is unexpected to
find a crocodyle in New Caledonia.

Note: Willis, 1995 believes that it may have climbed trees and may have
had a life style similar to arboreal large lizards.
