Etymology: Pisco, name for the formation in Southern Peru in which the material was found; Latin, gavialis, East-Indian gharial (Gavial), indicating the gavialid nature of the fossil material.

Species: jugaliperforatus KRAUS, 1998
Etymology: Latin, jugal, “jugal” and Latin, perforatus, “perforated”: Jugal perforated.

Holotype: SMNK 1282 PAL

Locality: About 450 km south of Lima, 15.54 S, 74.79 W., southeast of Pampa Montemar, 10 km west of Lomas in the Sacaco Basin in southern Peru.

Horizon: Montemar Vertebrate Level, Pisco Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Miocene Epoch, Lower Neogene Period, Upper Tertiary Subera, Middle Cenozoic Era,- Pliocene Epoch, Upper Neogene Period, Lower Quaternary Subera, Upper Cenozoic Era.

Material: Skull, mandible and postcranial material.
