Etymology: Latin, serratus, "toothed like a saw," referring to theserrated margin of the dorsal shield.

Etymology: Latin, taphos, "a tomb," and Latin, ensis, a suffix denoting locality, referring to Death Valley as teh collecting locality for this species.
