Etymology: After the Vernicomes, the Caledonian tribe which inhabited that part of the Southern Pictavia which is now in Angus, Scotland, and Greek, akantha, “thorn.”

Etymology: After Wayne Herbert Quarry.

Locality: Wayne Herbert Quarry, near Newton, Southwest Herefordshire, England, Southern Unitd Kingdom.
Horizon:
Biostratigraphy: Pteraspis crouchi zone, about 66 m above the main ‘Psammosteus’ limestone.
Age: Dittonian, Upper Gedinnian Regional Stage, Lochkovian Stage, Early Devonian Epoch, Early Devonian.
Material: Nearly complete specimen.
Referred mateiral:
BMNH P.16614: Part of the flank in the region of the shoulder-girdle.
BMNH P.16615: The ventral region of the flank with the dermal shoulder-girdle and the most anterior intermediate spines.
BMNH P.52441a, b: Most of the body forwards from the anial-spine to the branchiostegal rays, and the same slab as a specimen of Pteraspis rostrata.
BMNH P.52443: The ventral region of the trunk with the intermeditae spines.
